On Saturday the 26th a levee broke in Desoto Bend and is now flooding Desoto and areas east and north. Evacuations have been ordered for those areas around Desoto. Grover is closed from Hwy 30 south and Desoto Ave into the south end of the Refuge is closed. Also today the IDOT has closed Hwy 30 for 2 days to install trapbags to hopefully prevent floodwaters from closing hwy 30 for the rest of the summer. The Decauter bridge is also closed for now. For the next two days, the only way to cross into Nebraska from here is Sioux City or Omaha
Looking SSW.... Omaha skyline in the backround...Iowa Feed & Grain and Hansen and Sons buildings in the right middle
That puts Mo Valley in the 3+inch range......lots of water standing in fields as it has no where to drain.....our sump pump in the basement started yesterday, so groundwater is high. Corps announced that due to heavy rains up north, they will ramp up realeases to 160000cfs from Gavins Point.
You have probably seen these pictures, but if not they are here Do you want a strong password that is easy to remember? Use a simple password or passphrase that contains at least 1 uppercase and lowercase alpha and and 1 number and 1 symbol then simply pad it with an easy to remember combination to make it long. Read article here.....it makes a lot of sense !!
Normally these would be million dollar rains in June....but not so much now....40-50 mph winds last night and over 2 inches and nearly 4 inches in Mondamin & Missouri Valley respectivly. Lots of water standing in fields that cannot drain...

Had a little scare yesterday. It was reported that a small boil (water seeping through the levee from river side to the dry side) had developed on Desoto. Don't know wether it was an old tube or an animal hole, but the group that is watching and maintaining it got it patched and it is holding for now. That will be the norm for the next 3 months.....trying to hold the levee system together by the efforts of many people in our community. Despite their heroic efforts I am concerned about the unprecedented flow and duration of flow. Also wave action from a very wide Missouri River will keep eroding at these dikes as time passes.
There has been breeches around Hamburg about 50 miles south of us. River levels are leveling out for now. |
